Withycombe RFC
Penryn RFC

After 3 weeks off Penryn Ladies travelled up to Withycombe on a very wet and blustery Sunday. Following a week of horrendous rain Withycombe Ladies moved the game to Bicton College, where the pitch was in good condition and playable.

Penryn Ladies were without several key players and had to have a reshuffle in the back line. Sarah stovell moved to scrum half and Lauren Chenoweth moved into fly half, both the Captains controlling the game very well out of their normal positions.

The sun made a rare appearance at the blow of the whistle, with Withycombe Ladies getting the game underway. Penryn Ladies gathered the ball and showed their intent straight away with some excellent attacking rugby. Withycombe Ladies were not going to make it an easy afternoon for Penryn Ladies, with some thunderous hits going in and good work at the breakdown. Penryn Ladies stuck to their game plan and worked through the phases and were rewarded with a try. After the first try Penryn Ladies started to find a good rhythm and were 34-0 up at half time.

After the break the rain came in and Withycombe Ladies used this to their advantage coming back very strong, making Penryn Ladies work hard for every ball at the breakdown. Penryn Ladies didn’t panic from this pressure and managed to make several good line breaks, which allowed the quick backs to create space around the outside of the Withycombe Ladies defence.

The final score was 68-0 to Penryn Ladies, however the score does not reflect how hard this game was and all credit to Withycombe Ladies for working hard to the end.

Sophie Smart was forward of the match, who had a cracking game in both attack and defence, leading the forwards from the front. Annie McKelvey was a much deserved back of the match after bagging several tries and having an incredible work rate around the pitch.

Special mentions go to Roberta Scotland, Jaimie Justice and Kelly Richards. Bobby and Jaimie making their Penryn debuts both with solid performances. Kelly came off the bench and had a fine game with excellent scrummaging and support play.

Well done to all the players today, they done the Borough proud.

Penryn Ladies look forward to their next game next Sunday, which is at home to Totnes Ladies.
