Minehead Barbarians RFC

7 - 26

(HT 7-19)

Penryn RFC

Penryn Ladies were on the road again travelling to Minehead Ladies for their first clash and first game of 2020.

Penryn Ladies were missing quite a few players through injury and other commitments so went with just 15 players. After a long journey Penryn Ladies arrived at a brisk Minehead.

The pitch was not the best for running rugby, the grass was long and it was on a hill located half a mile from the club pitches! Penryn Ladies opted to play down hill first. After receiving the kick off Penryn Ladies went through the phases well and worked their way up the pitch. It wasn’t long before the borough ladies went over for their first try from hooker Zeta Penrose. It was converted by Frankie Rickard making it 0-7.

Not long into the first half Penryn Ladies co-captain Sarah Stovell suffered a nasty injury forcing her off the pitch. With no subs and Minehead Ladies not dropping a player Penryn Ladies were forced to play a player down. Sarah stovell heroically made her return to the pitch just 10 minutes later. Back up to full numbers Penryn Ladies were on the attack again. After attacking Minehead Ladies line for sustained periods it was Sarah Stovell who crossed for the borough ladies second try, again it was converted by Frankie Rickard making it 0-14. Minehead Ladies were not making it easy with their hard running and their work at the breakdown forcing Penryn Ladies defence to remain strong to hold them out. Penryn Ladies finished off the first half with another try by Lauren Chenoweth With no conversion making the score 0-19.

Penryn Ladies were playing up hill and into the setting sun in the second half so knew it was going to be a tough 40 minutes. After quick hands from Minehead Ladies they created a 2 on 1 on the wing and ran in under the posts. Penryn Ladies re-grouped and started to attack again putting Minehead Ladies under pressure. Another 2 injuries meant Penryn Ladies were down to 13 players, with Minehead sportingly agreeing to drop 2 players.

With play becoming more disjointed with injuries and stoppages Penryn Ladies struggled to keep their attack going. Finally Penryn crossed for a 4th try from winger Tanya Read, which was converted by Frankie Rickard making it 7-26.

With temperatures falling Penryn Ladies wound down the clock and still remain unbeaten this season.

A big well done to all players who dug deep and ground out a well deserved victory.

Back of the match was Penryn Ladies very own Rambo Sarah Stovell, who played exceptionally well with a serious injury. Forward of the match was Jenna Saberton, who’s work rate was tireless all game, leading the defensive line and making some big hits.

Try scorers: Zeta Penrose, Sarah Stovell, Lauren Chenoweth, Tanya Read
