Benji was an exceptionally talented player, playing for Penryn RFC in the 60’s and 70’s. He played in the side that travelled to the Middlesex 7s finals at Twickenham which was one of the highest accolades of the time. His playing career didn’t stop there as he also represented his county 21 times donning the Black and gold and representing Cornwall.
After his playing career Benji transitioned into coaching. He worked alongside the great Les Williams who he learnt a lot from going forward. Benji was a very innovative coach who saw the game in a different way to most, coaching in a style ahead of his time. Benji mentored many young coaches and he was instrumental in the introduction of academies. Coaching young talented players before moving on to larger clubs. Benji had a special way with his players, he could always get that extra 10% out of you. His enthusiasm was infectious as many will know first-hand.
This unique trait also made him a fine teacher. He taught at Penryn College for 36 years where he would make you feel like you always mattered, what ever the scenario. He was so motivational, the hundreds of people and kids who forged their way in the world with his words ringing in their ears, believe me I am one of those people.
I am one of those who could count him as a mate and in these last few weeks when he began to get very poorly, we just had some laughs talking about old times. The word legend does not do him justice because he was so much more than that. Benji R.I.P me old mate, Sir we at the Borough will never forget you and your presence.
Marf.
