FALMOUTH 14 PENRYN 31

Penryn secured their first away win of the season in the best possible circumstances, as they emphatically dispatched of local rivals Falmouth in a superb bonus point display. Penryn had previously been searching for a first away league point of the campaign, but took a maximum five on derby day thanks to a dominant performance and a Josh Chambers hat trick.

In front of a big crowd and excellent away following, the Borough started well and never looked back. Early dominance in the scrum set the tone and from there on it would be a common theme. The away side carried all the early threat and menace in attack and were soon rewarded when Josh Chambers scooted down the right wing to finish well and get Penryn on the board. Sam Carter converted well and added a penalty soon after to make it 0-10 - a lead Penryn were good value for.

There was a sense that Penryn were about to break free of the shackles a tense derby can produce, but a ten point lead at the break was certainly not to be sniffed at. After the break though, it was a different story. Penryn looked for all money to add to their total with another dominant scrum, but a retreating home pack were awarded a penalty before a classic derby day scuffle saw Chris Hellier and his opposite man go for a 10 minute cool off.

The Borough ignored that disappointment and soon added a crushing blow, as Chambers again showed good pace to get around his man and race over for a cracking score. Carter extended the gap to 17 and it was a long way back for the home side, even with 30 minutes to play. If there were any alarm bells ringing they were short lived, as after Falmouth got themselves on the board, the Borough struck immediately to extinguish any lingering hopes the Eagles may have had.

Penryn approached the 22 with menace once again and after a strong carry from Ethan Pattison made the initial dent, second row Steele Barker stretched over to put the visitors 15 clear again. Carter added two more to make it 7-24. At this stage the result was never in doubt, but a bonus point was very much in the offing and the Borough grabbed it with both hands. Surging forward at every opportunity now, Penryn had a foot on the Falmouth throat and when Chambers stood up his man and raced around him in front of the jubilant away support, his hat trick was complete and it was job done for the Borough. Carter made it 7-31 and Penryn were in dream land at the Rec.

Falmouth did muster a consolation try at the end despite the dubious nature of the score and while Penryn had one of their own chalked off that looked like a try, it was very much a case of a job well done. The away day monkey is well and truly off the back and Penryn can look forward to a tasty looking clash at home to Kingsbridge next week.
