John Williams

It is with great sadness that Penryn Rugby Club mourns the death of John Williams on 27 March 2021.

In 1987 Penryn RFC was in serious financial difficulty. Gradually a large grassroots group of members / supporters began sharing ideas and energy to address the problem. This lead to an extraordinary general meeting which resulted in a new committee and new officers, who were determined to work hard to turn the club around.

John realised straightaway that the situation required more than enthusiasm and endeavour; it required expertise and leadership, which he had in abundance. He became Hon.Treasurer and deployed his serious business and financial skills to the travails of The Borough, with the result that the rest of us happily rolled up our sleeves to do our bit.

A huge amount was achieved to make the club start to thrive again. This was a serious turning point, the success of which we are all enjoying to this day. John continued to work tirelessly as treasurer for five years. Penryn Rugby Club owes John so much; and it offers its condolences to his family.
