Penryn 13 Kingsbridge 10
It was another titanic battle against Kingsbridge, but thirteen points from Man of the Match Sam Carter was enough to take home the points for the Borough in a tight contest that went right to the wire. Penryn continue to prove a tough nut to crack on their own track, but needed a late penalty from the scrum half to secure victory.
Clashes with the Devonians are always physical and uncompromising and with heavy conditions under foot, it was always likely to be again on this occasion. It didn’t disappoint. Penryn struck first, hitting the visitors in an area where they are normally strongdst. Steele Barker got up well in the lineout to pinch a visiting throw and the forwards went to work with a series of punishing carries close to the line. Try as they might, Kingsbridge didn’t have an answer to the sheer volume of phases and it was Carter who snuck in before converting his own try.
The home side would have been particularly pleased with taking their first opportunity, as possession would become very much at a premium for the rest of the half. The visitors dominated the ball for much of the first half, but the home defence was equal to the task. Kingsbridge did muster a penalty goal before the break, but Penryn would undoubtedly be the happier of the two sides leading 7-3.
The second half started how the first had ended, with the visitors dominating possession despite an odd chink of light for the Borough. The home side did begin to advance into away territory more frequently, but couldn’t quite find that killer score. As Penryn seemed to begin to wrestle the ascendancy away from Kingsbridge a scuffle broke out, which saw Ryan Burley and a visiting counterpart spending 10 minutes in the bin. For whatever reason, this seemed to be a momentum swinger and it was the away side who soon found themselves in front for the first time in the game.
Having been so disciplined in defence all afternoon, the visitors finally spotted a gap to breach the Borough line and went over to take a three point lead at 7-10. Momentum is a massive part of modern day rugby and can be very tricky to wrestle back, but the home side showed huge determination to do exactly that.
A grandstand finish would soon be in the offing, as Penryn manufactured an excellent attacking position which yielded a penalty and levelled the scores thanks to Carter’s intervention. At 10-10 and with little time remaining, it all became a bit harem scarem with both sides looking to win it and there was to be a final twist. With Penryn on the attack a Kingsbridge knock on was deemed deliberate and regardless of the yellow card, the consequences for the visitors would be far more serious.
Carter lined up what would surely be a match winning kick and made no mistake from all of 40 metres, as the seconds ticked away. The visitors rushed to restart, but it only saw the home side get themselves straight back down to the Kingsbridge line as they now looked to deny the away side even a losing bonus point. In the end though, Penryn settled for what was an excellent win and booted the ball off the park to start the celebrations. Another superb win at the Memorial Ground, which leads to a fortnight off before the resumption of the league campaign away at Honiton in December.
