For the first time in nine months, rugby finally returned to the Borough, as Pirates Amateurs were the visitors. The long gap since the last run out hit Penryn hard, as the Borough were in fine form after a strong first season back in Western Counties. The boys have been training hard on and off for close to six months as per the RFU roadmap and were ready to fire into the Ams.

With the new law variations a fast game was always likely to be in the offing and so it proved, in what produced an entertaining spectacle. The Borough picked up where they left off in March, making an excellent start to the game. There were some new faces in the Borough line up since the last outing, but it was a familiar one doing the early damage as Kyle Bradley skated over for the first Penryn try of the restart. Mitchell Vague, starting at outside centre again, converted smartly from the touchline.

Penryn were free flowing in attack and hungry in defence, an effort epitomised by Fly Half Sean Johnson who made a big shot on one of the visitors big ball carriers. When Adam Hughes finished well for Penryn’s second try, with a second Vague conversion making it 14-0, a comfortable afternoon looked to be ahead for the home side. It was anything but that. The Ams impressed many on the day and looked a tough and well drilled outfit, as they fought their way back into contention with two tires and a conversion, to take the score to 14-12.

Alarm bells were soon ringing for Penryn, as a late penalty gave the Ams a shock 14-15 lead. The response form the Borough was a good one however, as they showed good urgency to get back down into the Ams 22 and almost immediately regain the lead thanks to a Vague penalty. The home side showed good ambition at the end of the game too, spurning an opportunity to kick another goal and extend their lead, by tapping and going near the Ams line. It paid dividends too, as Hughes stretched out to add a second and confirm a hard earned win.

The Saracens were also back in action, going down 3-13 to the Pirates Amateurs second XV earlier on in the afternoon, against a similarly impressive and well drilled Ams side. The Saracens have become a strong outfit in their own right and will get stronger as the weeks go on, with superb numbers at senior training and a shared vision for rugby throughout the club.

Earlier on in the day the Colts lost to Truro, but it was fantastic to see the return of Colts rugby at the Borough and we will no doubt see some excellent results for the boys as the season progresses. After nine months away, to be able to field three strong teams is a testament to the exciting direction the club is heading in.
