Penryn Ladies v Launceston Ladies, 19th September.
Play was evenly matched today as penryn ladies welcomed Launceston Ladies at home for their first match of the season, a friendly that ended in a draw. The first half saw the relatively new but very well drilled Launceston take dominance. After a strong start by the home side from the kick off, which the visitors defended strongly, Launceston got Into their stride and attacked several times down the wings before they were rewarded with their first try. Despite a counter attack from Penryn, with some great forward carries and well worked backs moves they just couldn’t break the visitors defence and conceded a further try just before half time, which came from some excellent backs handling and lines of running. Penryn were however not down and out and came back fighting in the second half. Relentless pressure from the home team from the kick off was rewarded with a penalty five metres out, giving Zeta Penrose the opportunity to crash over for the score. This gave Penryn the momentum they needed and from then on play rarely left Launceston’s half, with both forwards and backs making ground and working well together. A superb individual effort from Claire Thompson, which saw her dance through defence from her own ten metre line, was the final score before time was called on the match. Both teams have a lot of positives to take from this friendly before the league matches start. Penryn travel to Chew Valley Cats next Sunday to kick start their competition in NC1 South West.
